When the rest of the world begins slowing down and getting away on lazy summer
holidays, NFR get busier than ever. This summer we have had a bumper slate of
events to keep us active and get us noticed on the local running scene and further
afield.
Our first ever collaboration with RunThrough in the new Newcastle Half-Marathon
and 10k event on July 14 th was a big success and got our club noticed by a wider
audience. Next up was our own LGBT5k – an altogether different event, where tiaras
are more important than times and the Town Moor was turned into a sea of colour.
As it was part of the Northern Pride weekend in Newcastle we got to show off in the
Pride Parade through the city centre, as well as let our hair (and wigs) down at our
annual Frontrunners Party in the city.
Every August we make our annual pilgrimage to our sister club in Glasgow for their
OUTrun weekend – a wonderfully scenic 5-mile run through the beautiful Kelvingrove
Park, followed of course by a ceilidh in the evening, and brunch for those not too
hungover on the Sunday… Being the 10 th OUTrun event it was extra special, and all
500 places sold out for the first time.
August races finished with the lovely Watergate 5k organised by local club Low Fell
RC. A regular fixture on the summer calendar for many of our members we had a
great turnout – and clocked some cracking times too! There was also a colour run in
Chopwell Woods where we got pelted with powder paints. But that wasn’t the end of
August activities – we got involved in Pride in Gateshead activities, and Bank
Holiday Monday saw us travel up to Alnwick Gardens for the annual Gay Day and
crowning of various stars including Mr Gay World and Mx Drag Great Britain.
Next is of course the local big one – the Great North Run. Lots of our members have
been training throughout the heat of summer to get ready for lining up on Sunday 8 th
September. We are expecting many runners from fellow Frontrunner clubs across
the UK so we have a cheering party on the central motorway and a pub garden
booked to show off our medals in the afternoon. If you’re watching on the tele look
out for our distinctive club vests heading along the roads to South Shields…
Inspired by what you’ve read? We have 3 formal training sessions a week for all
abilities, covering strength work as well as intervals and long, chatty Sunday runs.
